Austin, TX the leader in National Economic Rankings … Again

austin employmentAfter a one month drop from the top spot in the Business Journals “On Numbers Economic Index” Austin has returned to first on the list.  Austin had been the national leader from February through June until Provo, Utah moved ahead in July.

The Business Journal’s On Numbers Economic Index attempts to distinguish the best economy amongst 102 major metropolitan areas with a population of 500,000 or more.  The index takes a look at private sector employment, unemployment rates, weekly earnings among private sector workers, construction and retail related employment, and house values.

Austin’s surge back to the top was a result of its outstanding employment outlook and housing market.  The Austin market has added 65,600 private sector jobs in the past five years and has the strongest movement upward in home values having climbed 7.1% since 2008.
